Alcoholism runs in Hiram's family as cancer (and schizophrenia) does in mine. Like most Western girls, I spent my youth starving -- originally from want, later from choice. "Choice." We wanted to be better -- not to be rich, no certainly not, we knew those were never our cards. We wanted to be the artists who saved us from our own sad histories with songs and art and ideas. But it's so hard, when so much of your history is unrecorded, deliberately obscured by your society because it's just too hard to fix, to save everyone -- even the children who've yet to commit their own sins. That terrible knowledge freezes our blood and makes it so hard to keep trying. That, and being fucking broke. In every sense.

There's a boy (who looks a lot like I did) living with his father's disease and a girl who dreams at night of cancer because she thinks it will make her beautiful. And they're both just sitting and waiting for someone who looks a lot like them. And they hug each other a little and listen for ghosts in the other room. There's a song they sing to each other that neither one can remember, so they stay exactly where we left them, watching ghosts swirl around their room.
